Dust collector filter replacement: criteria and monitoring

Updated:

A dust collector filter works best when it is slightly dirty: a thin layer of dust on the media actually improves capture. Past a certain point, though, the filter clogs, suction at the workstations drops and the fan works harder. The question is how to recognise that point.

Differential pressure as the operating indicator

The accepted method is to measure the differential pressure across the filters, the difference between the dirty-air side and the clean-air side. A differential pressure gauge on the collector shows this value at all times.

  • A gradual rise is normal: the filters load with dust and the cleaning system (compressed-air pulses or shaking) brings them back into the working range.
  • Pressure that stays high even after cleaning means the filters are blinded or the cleaning system is not working properly.
  • A sudden drop can indicate a torn or displaced filter. Dust is then passing to the clean side and out of the stack.

The normal working range and the replacement point are set in the manufacturer's instructions for the collector and the filters.

Supporting indicators

  • Visible dust at the outlet or around the collector.
  • Reduced suction at workstations.
  • High compressed-air consumption by the cleaning system.
  • Bags or cartridges that are torn, stiffened or worn at the seams.

Combustible dust and NFPA 660

Dust from organic materials (flour, sugar, wood, pharmaceuticals), metals and plastics can ignite, and even explode, when dispersed in air. A dust collector is one of the places where this risk is concentrated.

NFPA has consolidated its combustible dust standards, including NFPA 652 and NFPA 654, into a single standard: NFPA 660, first published in 2025. One of its core principles is the Dust Hazard Analysis (DHA): a structured review of the material, the process and the equipment, from which the protective measures follow.

Decisions on protection for a collector, such as explosion venting or isolation, are made on the basis of the hazard analysis and the authorities' requirements, not a rule of thumb.

Replacement procedure and records

  • Replace the full set, not a single filter, to keep airflow even.
  • Use media suited to the dust, temperature and humidity of the process.
  • Record the differential pressure before and after replacement.
